Tues 11/6 – OVA Board Workshop on Future of Oakmont

During a committee meeting this past week Kevin Hubred, identified 76 as the average age of new residents moving into Oakmont over the past year. According to Real Estate sales statistics, 193 Oakmont homes were sold in this same 12 month time frame.

Retirees continue to be attracted to Oakmont primarily for its Sonoma Valley location, moderate weather, affordable range of available homes and low dues. Not to be forgotten is the sense of community shared between long-term and new resident members.

Much like the Pickleball courts behind Central Pool, there are contentious, and potentially expensive new projects on the horizon:

• Purchasing OGC propert(ies)
• tearing down and moving OVA’s maintenance building,
• tearing down the Berger Center and/or building a second new and expanded community hall,
• expanding the fitness center,
• purchasing the existing Benson building and or relocating the OVA offices,
• subsidizing the OGC golf courses,
• $300,000 dog park.

Bruce Bon offers several well-considered options in his piece, What Should Oakmont’s Future Look Like, and Who Should Decide?

He writes… “The current Bylaws and other governing documents give the Board the authority, so … We can hope that the Board will ask us in some fashion, perhaps with another Oakmont survey, but they have no obligation to do so, and I have no indication at this point that they intend to do so, beyond holding a workshop where all of us are allowed to speak.”

Tuesday is Midterm election day, however, it is also an important start to the discussion on Oakmont’s future and who should be making these critical decisions.

The Long Range Planning Committee, partnering with the Oakmont Board, is inviting residents to share their ideas on the future of Oakmont at a workshop meeting Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Berger Center.
