OVA Board Meeting Notes – 2024 December

On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, the Oakmont Village Association (OVA) Board of Directors will hold its regular monthly meeting. OVA members may view the agenda and meeting packet here and instructions for joining the meeting via Zoom here. The purpose of this article is to encourage OVA members to attend the meeting, either in person or via Zoom, and to call attention to a few items of interest that are in this month’s agenda. Section headings below duplicate the section headings in the meeting agenda. After the meeting, I may revise or add information if there are interesting discussions or surprising decisions made at the meeting.

4. Consent Calendar

This month’s meeting packet includes application documentation for a new OVA club, the NIA Movement Club, on pp. 3-13 of the packet. This approach to fitness combines dance, martial arts and mindfulness practices. It appears that there will be classes twice a month on Sundays — check your Oakmont News for the schedule.

7. Other Reports

In addition to the monthly Treasurer’s Report (Item 7. A., pp 15 – 36), there are reports to the Board from the Long Range Planning Committee (p. 37) and from the Meet Your Neighbors Task Force (pp. 38-39).

9. Unfinished Business

Item 9.A. will be a report of the Governing Documents Ad Hoc Committee, but there is no documentation in the meeting packet.

Item 9.B. (p. 40) is the acceptance, by Jess Marzak, of his appointment by the Board to the position of Secretary.

10. New Business

The 2025 Insurance Renewal Resolution and associated documentation, which appears for approval as item 10.A. in the agenda , can be found on pages 41 – 91.

Item 10.B. calls for Board approval of 2025 Updated Election Rules. The resolution and the revised election rules, with changes from earlier election rules shown in red, can be found on pages 92 – 111. Most changes appear to deal with the possibility of allowing electronic voting by OVA members.

Item 10.C. (pp. 112-113) is a resolution for replacement of the Berger AV Projector, at a cost not to exceed $14,000.

Items 10. D. Committee Liaisons and 10.E. Central Complex Update have no supporting materials in the meeting packet.

As noted in the meeting agenda, next month’s regular Board meeting will take place on January 21, 2025.

Item 7.D.1.  Rex Fuller also reported, for LRPC, that there are three openings on the committee, and that the committee has reviewed a number of applicants and will deliver their recommendations for filling those positions to the OVA Board in January.

Item 8.  Open Forum — It is worthy of note that Mark Randol spoke, at the Open Forum mike, so for himself and not speaking for the Board, on the topic of the possible closing of Maria Carrillo High School. Mark noted that Maria Carrillo is very highly rated and expressed the opinion that closing it would be a very bad mistake, urging Oakmont residents to make their opposition to Rio Carillo’s closing known. Finally, as noted in the OVA staff report on the meeting, there will be an informational session for people interested in serving on the OVA Board or the sub-HOA boards on January 20. Because of legally mandated dates for OVA Board elections, those running for the Board in 2025 will not have the benefit of attending this session prior to the January 9 deadline for submitting nominations for the Board, but interested members are urged to contact current Board members if they have any questions or need help with the application/nomination process. It was noted that the required schedule for elections in the sub-HOAs is different, and for many of them, interested sub-HOA board candidates for 2025 will not have to decide to run before the January 20 information session. It is also true, of course, that if you might consider running for the OVA Board in 2026, then the January 20 informational session will be an excellent opportunity to learn about the process and how governance works in Oakmont.
