Trail in East Annadel Park Now Open

Lawndale Trail on the eastern side of Annadel State Park is now open for hiking and mountain biking.  As of this date Ridge Trail and Pig Flat Trail remain closed. Marsh Trail is open only between Lawndale Trail and Pig Flat while Shultz Trail is open only as an out and back between the trail head and the power lines.

On a recent morning hike it was striking to see the change brought about by the fire. The taller pine trees are scorched at the base but continue to thrive in the canopy. Many madrone, manzanita, laurel and eucalyptus trees were completely burned in the fast-moving fire and all the dense underbrush present before the fire is cleared.

The thinning of the trees and foliage creates a much brighter sunny hike on this formerly very shady trail.

Ferns and other greenery are sprouting anew in the shadier glades but as one climbs the trail the forest floor is bare in most areas where dense underbrush and abundant poison oak previously thrived (and will again).

To reach Lawndale Trail from Oakmont, park at the East Recreation Center and follow the trail past the fishing pond and the picnic tables to the start of the connector trail to Annadel.  Currently the connector trail is narrow in places and bordered by shoulder height (and higher) grasses. Be sure to apply tick repellant prior to starting your hike.

From the ERC, the connector trail and Lawndale Trail climb 600 feet in two miles to the top of the hill, where it eventually reaches Ledson Marsh.  After climbing the steep hill behind the ERC the path flattens out and joins Lawndale Trail just past a wooden picnic table. Turn right and follow the easy trail in a gradual climb to the top of the hill and the entrance to Ledson Marsh.

Thank you for this report on the Lawndale Trail.

I misunderstood the closure situation and hiked the Lawndale/Schulz loop on Sunday, 27-May. Consistent with Michael Connolly’s report, signage at the Schulz Road trailhead says that the Schulz trail is only open as an out-and-back. But hiking the loop counterclockwise, I saw no signage telling of closure at the Pig Flat/Marsh intersection or elsewhere. I also saw other trail users (about nine mountain bikes in three or four parties). I also saw no reason why any part of the trail needed to be closed, though I do not know what I should have looked for. Perhaps a downed tree crossing the trail is the reason. If so, it is easily climbed-over by hikers, and the mountain bikes passed their machines over it easily, too.
