OVA Board Meeting Notes – 2024 October

With additions on October 17, reporting on activities at the Board meeting.

On Tuesday, October 15, 2024, the Oakmont Village Association (OVA) Board of Directors will hold its regular monthly meeting. OVA members may view the agenda and meeting packet here and instructions for joining the meeting via Zoom here. The purpose of this article is to encourage OVA members to attend the meeting, either in person or via Zoom, and to call attention to a few things that are on this month’s agenda. After the meeting, I may revise or add information if there are interesting discussions or surprising decisions made at the meeting.

The first item of general interest, under 9. UNFINISHED BUSINESS, will be a report by OVA General Manager, Christel Antone, on the status of the Bylaws Committee.  From the most recent meeting of that committee, I expected that a charter for that committee would be presented for Board approval (see OVA Bylaws Progress Report – 2024 October). But there is no draft charter or related resolution in the packet, so I assume that it has been delayed.

At the meeting: Christel confirmed that the charter has been delayed, and attributed the delay to the committee still working our roles and responsibilities with the lawyer (Nathan McGuire) who is advising them.

Next, under 10. NEW BUSINESS, will be selection by the Board of a director to replace David Dearden, who notified the Board of his intent to resign last month.

At the meeting: It was reported that they have received 7 resumes and, after the Board interviews the applicants, they will vote on who is to replace David Dearden at next month’s Board meeting.

The second item of new business will be approval of the 2025 Annual Budget. This is of general interest and importance, because the budget determines what our dues will be in 2025. As you can see on the 40th page of the packet (labeled 43 at the bottom of the page), the projected dues for 2025, assuming that the budget proposal passes, is $129/OVA member/month. This is a modest 3.2% increase over the 2024 dues of $125/member/month.

At the meeting: Treasurer Tom Kendrick explained the proposed budget and took questions. Income in 2024 has been less than projected, because the number of OVA members dropped by more than expected, but several of the expense items also have turned out to be lower than projected. It was noted that one major item of savings was on insurance premiums, which were considerably lower than projected after OVA staff identified a less expensive insurer. The budget resolution passed.

The final item of new business will be approval of $21,600 for replacement of the pond dock behind East Rec. The proposal is detailed on the 42nd and 43rd page of the packet.

At the meeting: After a short discussion, the resolution to replace the dock, with a not-to-exceed budget of $22,000, was approved by the Board.

Finally, at the back of the packet, are minutes from meetings of the OVA Communications Task Force, the Bylaws Ad Hoc Committee, the Architectural Committee, and the Oakmont Environmental Stewardship Task Force. Reading such documents is an excellent way for OVA members to keep informed about the important work that these committees and task forces do for Oakmont.

As noted in the meeting agenda, next month’s regular Board meeting will take place on November 19.
