New Board’s First Actions Reverse Prior Board Actions

After electing officers and appointing committee liaisons, the new Board of Directors took actions to reverse some of the work of the previous Board.
 
Director Al Medeiros made a motion to disband the Central Park Committee (CPC) and the Reserve Study Committee (RSC). Regarding the RSC, he said, “the general manager and the treasurer should be in charge of the Reserve Study.” Director Neufeld added, “Kevin is our professional manager and absolutely we should use him to do the work on the Reserve Study. He is the professional and we take advice from him.”

Regarding the CPC, Medeiros said, “I believe that we still need to investigate exactly what is going to happen with the Berger project and that is a key piece of real estate that is right next to the Berger Center.” He continued, “It’s possible that that real estate will be needed for something else.” Neufeld suggested, “I think that the Central Park Committee can be held in abeyance, mainly to find out what we are going to do with the Berger. Maybe we should keep it there for right now.” She did, however, then vote to disband both committees. It should be noted that some of the preliminary drawings of plans for a new or expanded Berger Center depict the area behind the Central Pool as a parking lot to address the expanded parking requirements of a larger or new building.

 
The motion was approved 4-2-1, with incumbent Directors Greg Goodwin and Carolyn Bettencourt voting no and President Steve Spanier abstaining. Spanier then said, “Typically the president will vote on some things but not others.”
 
In other actions, Goodwin was replaced as liaison of the Communications Committee by Medeiros. Neufeld later requested a future agenda item regarding the Communication Committee’s Social Media Policy, approved by the previous board: “I would like to see us discuss the policy that was passed to use Nextdoor as our venue for announcements and what-have-you.”

    Sadly this reminds me of the Trump vs Obama policy. No matter that the action taken is not the will of the people in Oakmont and no matter that what is being disbanded or reversed was good for the community. What matters, apparently, is that what came before be obliterated.
